Available Dogs

Thank you for your interest in our available dogs. We like to get to know the dogs in our care prior to posting them for adoption so if you do not see the dog you are looking for, feel free to put an interest form in telling us what you are looking for in a forever friend. We love to "match-make" and we may have a dog that is not yet posted that is perfect for you. Once we have an interest form from you, one of our staff will contact you (in 7 - 10 days) to discuss your needs in detail as well as the dog(s) you are interested in.

My name is Benji, I am a 2 year old male Chihuahua mix, looking for one or two companions to give me lots of attention! I love to be with my person and snuggle up to your side, but I like to play with toys and go on short walks too! I am working on my manners on my walks, because if I see another dog I want to bark and pull, but mostly if they get too close. I have never lived with another dog, but I have a golden retriever friend I have taken the time to know. It did not happen right away! I need time to get to know new dogs, as well as new humans. When new people come to the home, it can be very scary for me and I feel the need to protect my territory. Once I warm up make a friend, I have a lot of love! Maybe you have a treat, I'll show you a trick or two. I also love to be outside and run, or maybe spread out in the sun, so I would love a yard. I prefer to just be at home with my owner than to have people over, so if you are a homebody I am your home buddy! I'd probably do best as an only dog.

Does Benji like other pets?

Patience is key, but yes! If I see a dog I will bark a lot, and pull in their direction. If they don't get too close, I am better about controlling my reaction, so I can continue to work on this with you. I am slow to warm up with other dogs, so I may need to meet a new dog friend multiple times before we are buddies. We know I can be friends with a dog after some time, I love playing with my golden retriever friend. We roughhouse and play together in the yard. I have never lived with another dog, so this would take some adjusting, so I might do best as an only dog.

General Socialization Notes:

I am friendly and cuddly with my owner at home, however when people come over I show some territorial aggression. I could take some time to get to know you, but please go slow. Sudden movements are scary, and I may try to go after an ankle if I'm very uncomfortable, but with consistent training I will get used to meeting strangers! I am very protective of my space but with time I warm up to other others. When I am outside of my home I usually warm up better to others. I am treat motivated and very smart, so I am a good learner! I know a few tricks and respond to my name, can ride in the car, and I am used to having a crate I can choose to go in or out of.

Does Benji like children?

I would do best in a household with only one or two adults caring for me. Children ages 13+ I can warm up to with multiple meetings just like the adults, but no young children please!

Favorite Toys:

I love playing with my stuffed animal bear, bones and sometimes tennis balls.

Ideal Forever Home:

My ideal home is a quiet, single person or two person house without a lot of new people coming in and out. No young children please, only children 13+. I need time at home with my human, and if you have a dog friend I would like to get to know them too! Can we watch a movie while you scratch my ears?
