OREO - From A Defiant And Uncontrollable Dog, To A Well Behaved Agility Competitor

oreoweave (2).JPGOreo, a 4 year old border collie mix, is a happy go lucky dog.  And why shouldn’t he be, he is a member of All Breed Rescue & Training's agility team!  However it was not that long ago that Oreo’s owners considered him so defiant and uncontrollable that simply teaching him basic commands and manners appeared impossible.  At that time Oreo was known for his disobedient behavior.  He counter surfed, chased people and dogs, nipped at any child on a swing, nipped at everyone’s heels and was just a totally wild and rebellious dog.  He was even known to have cornered his owner in the kitchen nipping at her heels in response to a behavior he did not want to do.

Oreo’s owners turned to All Breed Rescue & Training for help.  With lots of patience and perseverance, Oreo completed all of the basic obedience classes.  More importantly, his owners learned about dog behavior, how to set rules Oreo could understand, and what to do when he didn’t do what they asked of him.  Oreo went on to succeed in advanced classes such as Outdoor Adventure, Just Tricks and Safety Dog.

Oreo, led by his young teenage owner and junior handler, now competes with All Breed Rescue & Training's agility team.   Agility training not only reinforces his learning and listening skills, but also helps him burn off some excess energy.

Without All Breed Rescue & Training's guidance, Oreo’s owners admit, they would not have been able to control him, and although heartbreaking, would not have been able to keep him.  Instead Oreo now knows his boundaries, is easy to deal with and is a well behaved and much loved dog.

SULLEY - Fear Based Agression Can Be Fixed!

Sully2_graduation.JPGSulley’s owners thought they were doing everything they should with him when he was a young puppy.  They socialized him like crazy, took him out in public whenever possible, and had even started training classes when he was just 12 weeks old.  So when Sulley suddenly began lunging and snapping at strangers, his owners became very concerned.  After discussing the issue with All Breed Rescue & Training, it became apparent that this new behavior first began after a bad experience at a veterinary office when Sulley was still very young.  An All Breed Rescue & Training behavioral counselor determined that these actions were the result of a newly developed fear of strangers.

Understanding Sulley’s reactions was a start, but how to deal with them was another issue.  Sulley’s owners worked closely with All Breed Rescue & Training to help Sulley overcome this fear, by facing the fear itself.  Sulley was gradually reintroduced to strangers and learned to understand that there was no reason to be fearful.  More importantly Sulley’s owners learned to read his body language to determine his level of fear and stress, and how to deal with it.

Sulley no longer lunges or snaps at strangers.  He has been able to successfully complete all of All Breed Rescue & Training’s obedience classes, and has also been certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen.  Sulley enjoyed obedience classes so much, that he is now on the All Breed Rescue & Training competition obedience team.  He completed his first obedience match recently, in a large building full of strangers.

KAIA - Declared 'Untrainable' by Other Trainers

KaiaLawn.jpg
Kaia was adopted from a local shelter in 2005, her age was estimated at 3 or 4 years. While Kaia got along fine with the other dog in the household, it soon became clear that she had some dog aggression issues, and that she was very fearful of most people. Because of her age, sex and breed (she appears to be an Australian Shepherd/Chow mix), many trainers did not think that Kaia could be rehabilitated. Some trainers believed the dog should be euthanized or given back to the shelter, or advocated the use of electric shock collars or choke chains. All Breed Rescue & Training believed that Kaia could be rehabilitated without harsh punishment.

Today, Kaia lives in a home with a juvenile dog who she raised from five months old. She is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen and has graduated from many advanced classes. When she graduated Just Tricks, she performed side by side with four other dogs who were all off leash and did beautifully, both in her behavior towards other dogs and in performing her tricks. She even took an interest in the audience, and enthusiastically came to greet each person after the performance.

Her bond to her owner is much closer than it ever was before they began at All Breed Rescue & Training, she loves to learn and come to class, and has proven herself over and over to be the perfect companion. Everyone who knew her in the beginning is amazed at the transformation she has made, and it is truly thanks to All Breed Rescue & Training.
